Let's get started

Choose your yarn and hook. If it's a 4 ply wool, a size 3.5 hook should be fine.

If it's a cotton twine, a size 2.5 or 3 should be fine.

                 (For right handed people)

Step 1 - Form a loop (ref to illustration 1)

Similar to tying a shoe lace.

Step -2  Form a loop with the ball side of yarn.

Step -3  remove yarn from fingers.

Step -4.  Hold loop with the other hand

Step -5 pulling the longer yarn
                   will shorten the loop.

Step -6  pulling the loop as shown,
                         will make loop bigger.
This free movement ensures that your                                crochet loop is perfect.

                    Step-7 Insert hook into loop.
Hold the other ends with your left                           fingers.

Step-8  This is the ideal position to begin with.
The right hand works the hook, the left index controls the flow & tension of yarn & thumb and middle finger hold the tail end to provide stability.

Step-9. Using the hook, grab the
                           yarn from below

Step-10  Pull hook and yarn through the loop

Step - 11  You have made your 1st chain, just below the hook.

Step - 12 Rpt steps 9 to 11 to make more chains.

Experiment on keeping tension of yarn loose or tight, ie. keep loops big or small and see how it feels. You will soon learn to keeps loops large enough for hook to pass through smoothly.

With a little practice, your chains will form in a consistent way,  same size.

 👍Happy chaining - on. 🙂
