Basic stitches: Single Crochet (sc)

It's  a good idea to know the anatomy of a chain & also terms & abbreviations. This will enable you to understand any pattern   1. The length of chains we made is called the foundation row or foundation chains. Our actual work is crocheted on these foundation chains. 2. Each chain (ch) appears to have 2 strands From the front side. It's actually has one more strand at the back which we'll see in the next Pic. 3. IMP: In case of SC, once we have our foundation chains ready, we chain 1 again, (not part of our foundation) to start our 1st row. This is called 'turning chain'. Ref to pic 1👇 1. In this 2nd pic, 👇you see the backside of foundation chains. 2. The short horizontal bars that you see, marked with pins, are called the bumps. This is the 3rd strand of a chain.  Choose your yarn and hook. If it's a 4 ply wool, a size 3.5 hook should be fine.  If it's a cotton twine, a size 2.5 or 3 should be fine.                  (For right handed people)       Step 1 - Form a loop (ref to illustration 1)                     Similar to tying a shoe lace. Getting organized

 Ideally, to start with, I recommend a thick yarn, something that's not expensive and easily available at home, or yarn shop, or $2 shops. It could be acrylic yarn, or twine from hardware or $2 shops. It has its benefits for beginners, namely, easy to handle, to see progress, to count stitches. Once you are familiar with basic stitches,  then you might want to move on to different yarns and threads and other accessories. Hooks are a bit tricky to get a hang of, as there are very many types in the market, apart from different sizes. Steel, metallic, wood, plastic are some of the types of hook body found in market. The ideal one depends on what you are comfortable with. Getting a good grip on the hook is an important factor while choosing a hook. If the size is not right, the tip of the hook splits the yarn (too small), or keeps dropping the stitches (too big).The final factor is the hook - tip, the actual hook part itself.
